  5.    1.  There has been a net increase of 46 virus detectors in version 2.8,
  6.    bringing the total to 1419 detectors.
  7.  
  8.    2.  In preparation for this version all available boot sector virus
  9.    samples were re-analyzed, with the intent of making VIREX for the PC's
  10.    detection of this type of virus more comprehensive and accurate.
  11.    In the process, the names of the viruses were changed to match the
  12.    standard names as recommended by the University of Hamburg's Virus
  13.    Testing Center.

  15.    3.  We altered VPCScan to make it NOT detect the un-encrypted virus
  16.    signatures that the Vsafe.com program, distributed by Microsoft Corp.
  17.    in MS-DOS 6.0, places into memory in most Vsafe load configurations.
  18.    If you experience difficulties with reports of viruses being found in
  19.    memory, please consider using Virex.com INSTEAD of Vsafe.  Virex.com
  20.    does not leave virus signatures in memory, and so is compatible with
  21.    anti-virus products from other vendors.

  23.    4.  VPCScan will now alert your Novell network console if, while logged
  24.    into the network, a user detects a virus during a scan.  If the version
  25.    of Novell Netware is less than 3.x, an appropriate entry is also written
  26.    to the SYS:SYSTEM\NET$LOG.MSG system log file.  This feature can be
  27.    turned off with the new "-!N" command line option. (VPCSCAN -!N)

  37.    1.  MANY new features and a change from freeware.  Read the VIREXPC.DOC
  38.    file for the full details after perusing the summary below.

  40.    2.  This release of the archive contains the full VPCScan virus detection 
  41.    and repair utility included in our commercial product, Virex for the PC.  
  42.    This replaces the freeware scanner VIRx.  It detects an additional 75 new 
  43.    viruses, bringing the total to 1373 signatures.
  44.        More significantly, through careful use of the generic integrity 
  45.    checking features of VPCScan, never available with VIRx, you can detect 
  46.    viruses previously unknown through the recognition of unexpected changes 
  47.    in your registered executables.

  49.    3.  Another popular program from our commercial package is included in
  50.    this archive - VIREX.COM.  This tiny resident utility monitors the loading 
  51.    and execution of everything you run from the DOS command line, and also
  52.    from within a Windows DOS session, and alerts you to any changes in your 
  53.    executables before letting the program run.  Unregistered programs or 
  54.    altered programs are also scanned for known viruses.  All this is done
  55.    so quickly that on a 386SX16 or faster system you will find it difficult 
  56.    to tell whether VIREX.COM is loaded or not, unless you attempt to run an 
  57.    infected program.  You may be amazed to find that VIREX.COM is ONLY USING 
  58.    704 bytes, total.  Worth a try !

  60.    4.  If you follow the directions in VIREXPC.DOC on using the generic 
  61.    Inoculation features of VPCScan, you will be able to repair virus 
  62.    infections and/or damage to your programs, Master Boot Record, Partition 
  63.    Boot Record(s), and CMOS settings.  Note that if the damage done to a 
  64.    program file was so extensive that VPCScan cannot generically repair it 
  65.    from the Inoculation record, VPCScan will notify you rather than to 
  66.    return a damaged version.
  67.    Certain specific common viruses can also be repaired even if no 
  68.    Inoculation record is found for the infected file.

  70.    5.  This package is no longer free, but is instead a fully functional
  71.    evaluation copy.  You will notice that it beeps at you and alerts you to
  72.    its unregistered status if it cannot find a valid registration key on your
  73.    system.  At the end of a VPCScan run, you will be shown a list of vendors 
  74.    from any of whom you can order Virex for the PC.  We recommend that you 
  75.    purchase directly from one of our retail distributors and send in your 
  76.    registration card to us.  You may also purchase from Datawatch at the 
  77.    suggested list price of $49.95.
